After pouring 2,240lbs of concrete this morning, I decided to crash on the couch and play a little Xbox, especially since my wife took the kids & my MIL shopping and won’t be back for about an hour. After firing it up, I get the dreaded update screen. 20 minutes later and it’s still not done. Sigh.

Do you have it set up to go into standby when you turn it off or turn fully off? I have mine in standby mode and I haven’t seen an update screen in at least a year.

I’m convinced Microsoft makes their updates slower than a glacier melting out of spite. This morning my MacBook had to update, which took two restarts and about five minutes in total. Last time the Windows 10 installation alongside it had to update, it took a good half an hour.

I don’t think I’ve started up any of my game consoles in over a year. I wonder how many hours it will be until I can use them once I fire them up. They’re older, so perhaps there aren’t many updates to be had. And I don’t even know if the used Wii I found recently even works (no controllers or power supply).

But the old 2600 will probably still work after a nuclear blast...

I’ve only had this issue on the current gen consoles. Each update is 500MB+, and the actual install takes just as long as the download. Updates seem to get pushed at least once a month.

Their update server is definitely slow. Once it hits 75% downloaded, it slows down when further.

Fully off. I’ve only been able to play every couple of weeks, so I hate to leave it in standby mode.

I just booted mine up for the first time in a month for the Destiny beta and it was pretty rough too. And then the beta was 13gbs.

8 Cores, 8 GB of RAM and today’s game consoles still can’t do updates in the background? Goddamn, man. There’s no excuse at this point. They literally are PCs now. Could you imagine updating something on steam and having it cover your whole screen with a download bar not giving you any ability to do anything until it was done?

Update downloads need to be as innocuous as possible, and applying the update is something that should be done automatically after you shut off the machine.

I don’t get why the download can’t happen in the background as I’m playing the game. But instead, Microsoft won’t let you connect to Live until you’ve updated. So no access to save games, etc.

Why does it not update at 3AM like literally everything else

they can and do happen in the background, unless you turn the feature off. I haven’t dealt with a single xbone update in close to a year because it happens overnight, automatically. :)

that’s your problem then. Leave it on standby and you’ll never see that problem again.

you’re talking about a Service with the better part of a BILLION computers connecting to it, lol. When will Apple see a billion computers downloading osx updates? Never

Could be worse. Could be 8 hours.

Because I power it down when I’m not using it. I’ve had too many Xboxes melt down, so I’m paranoia about leaving them on. But it would be nice to be able to opt to do the update when you’re done using it for the day.
